What is PIA?

The National Association of Professional Insurance Agents (PIA) represents independent Professional Insurance Agents in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. Our members are local Main Street Agents who serve their communities throughout America.

PIA members realize the importance of an organization that advocates on their behalf and enables them to stay informed, educated and connected to other insurance professionals. They also benefit from the many business-building tools that only an organization with the size and experience of PIA can offer. PIA supports them so they can be the professionals that today's and tomorrow's customers demand.

Serving Agents Since 1931

PIA was founded with objectives that are as relevant today as they were back in 1931:

• Educate agency owners and staff about insurance concepts;
• Keep agents informed about changing company offerings;
• Allow agents to assist one another in proper underwriting of their business;
• Increase cooperation between carriers and agents;
• Encourage uniform policy writing and assist in proper form completion;
• Advocate for agents in legislative matters;
• Foster acquaintanceship among agents so they could support one another;
• Protect the American Agency System

Who Are PIA's Members? As independent Professional Insurance Agents, PIA’s members generally represent not one, but multiple insurance companies. This enables them to provide their local customers, both individuals and small to mid-size businesses, with a choice of coverages to meet their unique insurance needs. They are leaders in their communities, providing personal attention to customers, one neighbor at a time. Concerned Americans PIA members, and PIA staff on their behalf, are active in the politics that govern their communities, states and nation. As local owners of small businesses, PIA members are concerned that laws and regulations serve not just the business community, but also their neighbors who depend upon the availability of good, affordable insurance to protect the things they hold dear. This delicate balance is the reason PIA so ardently supports regulatory modernization of insurance in a manner that preserves state regulation. Done properly, this helps to streamline regulatory processes, thus reducing burdens on business, while ensuring that insurance oversight remains close to the people, so their concerns can be heard and they can be adequately protected. In Legislatures Across America

PIA represents members' interests in state capitals and on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. to ensure that lawmakers understand insurance agents' positions. PIA's grassroots campaigns and our political action committee, PIAPAC, give individual agents a powerful collective voice in government.

Within the Industry

PIA works with carriers and industry organizations - the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), the National Council of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL), the Association for Cooperative Operations Research and Development (ACORD) and others - to ensure that the concerns of independent agents are addressed. Members have access to materials to strengthen their agency and to keep them up to date with industry trends and regulations.

PIA members receive concise, accurate and timely information needed to better manage their business. An array of national and state publications keep members up to date with the latest industry news and provide tools to improve their bottom line.

Through the PIA Main Street Store PIA offers a variety of insurance products, such as E&O, umbrella, health, life, disability, and ADD; financial services; and "PIA Plus" products/discounts that will strengthen your business. Member-only benefits include the PIA Branding Program (local print advertising), Agency Perpetuation Central (resources for agency perpetuation, business succession, and ownership transfer) and the Agency Agreement Review Service.

By Educating Agents

PIA is the insurance industry's unquestioned leader in providing education courses to help professionals maintain their competitive edge and licenses. PIA National has an online education program including CE and professional skills courses. Other educational programming, including designation programs such as CIC, CISR, and CPSR, are offered by local PIA affiliates.

Through a Network of Professionals

Good agents know that they are in a people business. Membership in PIA ensures that if an agent doesn’t have the answer to a client's question, he/she will know someone who does.
