Documents You Need When Disaster Strikes

Experts say it is crucial to identify and prepare important documents before a disaster strikes. Such documents include mortgage or rental agreements; homeowners, renters, and automobile insurance policies; financial statements and account numbers; tax records; and medication prescription copies. Illinois Insurance Director Michael McRaith recommends that homeowners go to each room in their home to write down their contents, making special note of antiques, jewelry, and collectibles. He also advises homeowners to keep one copy of the inventory at home and a second copy at another location, and to periodically update the list along with receipts for expensive items.
