Former San Francisco 49ers place kicker Ray Wersching was indicted March 23 on federal insurance fraud and tax evasion charges for allegedly embezzling more than $8 million in premiums paid to his Redwood City, California insurance agency between 1997 and 2000. State and federal officials say Wersching falsified documents and records of his business, transferring premium funds to the operating account of his company instead of remitting the funds to Farmers Insurance.
Wersching’s attorney, Charles J. Smith, said in a statement his client didn’t commit any criminal act and is the victim of a former employee. Wersching played for the 49ers from 1977 to 1987 and won two Super Bowls with the team.
