PIA National Asks 18-Month "Cooling Off Period" for Do Not Call

Because serious questions remain to be resolved about which laws will apply to the activities of PIA agencies and which regulators will oversee our activities, PIA National has again requested that FCC and/or Congress invoke the existing 18-month transition period for states to determine their compliance response. We are encouraging affiliates and members to send similar letters to their Members of Congress and state Attorney General.

What It Means to Agents: PIA does not oppose Do Not Call laws or procedures. And this request does not side-step PIA members' current existing compliance obligations in this area or what FCC may demand as of October 1, 2003.

Our only interest is to demand that time and clear legal direction be given to PIA members so that they know what is expected of them, in both their prospecting and current client communications. Further, PIA wishes to assist lawmakers in crafting legislative and regulatory responses that are effective and avoid legal clashes and defects that can render the best intentions moot.
