NAIC Fall Meetings Underway, Vice President Biden to Speak, PIA Is There

The fall meetings of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) are underway in National Harbor, Maryland outside Washington, D.C., a short distance from PIA National’s headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia. PIA is attending and participating.

In advance of these meetings, on Thursday, September 17, PIA National public policy staff attended a private briefing with CEO Therese M. Vaughan at her invitation.

The NAIC will welcome nearly 50 state legislators to the meetings. Lawmakers are in the nation's capital this week to discuss a broad range of public policies impacting insurance consumers. Major issues expected to be addressed include sweeping changes in providing health care and shoring up the nation’s financial system.

On Tuesday September 22, Vice President Joe Biden will give what his office is describing as a major health care policy address to the NAIC.

“We are pleased the Administration selected our national meeting as a venue for this important national dialogue,” said NAIC President and New Hampshire Insurance Commissioner Roger Sevigny. “State insurance regulators are all too familiar with health insurance concerns and complaints. In many of our departments, at least half the consumer telephone calls we take are health insurance-related. We look forward to working with both the Administration and Congress to help make improvements for the overall health of our nation.”
