New York Insurance Superintendent Eric Dinallo will resign July 3 to become a professor at New York University. Gov. David Paterson announced the departure on May 28. In a statement, Paterson hailed Dinallo as “a national leader in the insurance industry” and “a stalwart advocate for New Yorkers.” He credited Dinallo’s collaborations with the U.S. Treasury Department, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and others in addressing the AIG crisis.
Appointed in January 2007 by then-Gov. Eliot Spitzer, Dinallo was confirmed by the New York state Senate in April 2007 as the 39th superintendent of the New York State Insurance Department. He previously worked as general counsel for Willis Group Holdings and managing director and global head of regulatory affairs for Morgan Stanley. He served under then-AG Spitzer as chief of the securities bureau, where he led investigations into the financial services industry. It is widely believed that Dinallo will run for New York Attorney General in 2010.
