Main Street Agents Pledge Continued Support for ACORD Initiatives

WASHINGTON, May 19, 2009  - The National Association of Professional Insurance Agents (PIA) today called for continued industry-wide adoption, support and use of ACORD forms and standards.

"As the domestic and global insurance marketplaces continue to evolve and become more complex, the need for common insurance data, processing, forms and standards will increase," said Keith Savino, PIA National's representative to ACORD. "That's why continued commitment to the availability of all current ACORD forms, along with development of new ones, is vital to our industry. PIA is fully committed to this effort."

ACORD provides the entire insurance industry with something all of its participants value highly: ease of doing business. Carriers, along with PIA members and all independent agencies and brokerage firms, have come to rely on ACORD for consistency in its forms and its standards. This consistency of data and elimination of redundancy achieved by ACORD's standards - together with the regulatory recognition and acceptance they afford - has moved the insurance industry ever closer to the ultimate goal of being on the same page.

PIA calls on all insurance carriers and producer technology vendors with whom we do business to fully support and commit to continued maintenance of current ACORD forms, their standards and use, as well as the adoption and use of new ACORD forms.  We also encourage insurance technology vendors that do business with carriers and producers to stay current with ACORD fillable forms and electronic standards.

"Independent agents and brokers created ACORD almost 40 years ago and they continue to be a major driver for ongoing change. The success we have achieved as an organization both nationally and internationally has much to do with the unwavering support from the members and leadership of the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents," said Greg Maciag, President of ACORD. " The power of industry collaboration is incredible and the customer is the ultimate winner."

"PIA National believes it is critical for all parties to work in the short term toward the full systemic adoption, implementation and acceptance of all ACORD forms and standards - those that currently exist and new ones in development," Savino said. "In support of this goal, PIA recommends that the comprehensive library of these ACORD forms and their standards be made operationally available to us for use between and among our many insurance parties. We believe that all ACORD forms must be available and able to be completed in a fillable fashion through our respective carrier or producer management systems."

PIA will continue to support and participate in ACORD, as well as assist our members, carriers and vendors to facilitate these objectives by working with ACORD on maintenance requests, new forms, workgroups and implementation efforts.
