PIA National is conducting a nationwide Grassroots Action to protest the first draft of USDA's Risk Management Agency's Standard Reinsurance Agreement for the federal crop insurance program.

In addition to the $6.4 billion cuts in the 2008 Farm Bill, the USDA's Risk Management Agency (RMA) is now proposing an additional $4 billion cut. The current SRA draft amounts to the largest cuts ever attempted by any Administration in the history of the crop program!

"This is a threat to our nation's farm safety net and an insult to America's crop insurance agents, all in the middle of one of America's worst economic recessions," said Dan Weber, Chair of the PIA National Crop Insurance Working Group. "It also jeopardizes our country's economic recovery. Even if you are an agent who never sells crop insurance, we would appreciate it you would contact your member of Congress and object to these proposed cuts."

"When America's farmers need crop insurance, they turn to their PIA agents," Weber said. "Now is the time for PIA agents to defend the crop insurance program."
