PIA Grassroots Alert on Farm Bill; Amendment PIA Opposed is Defeated
The Senate is currently debating S. 3240, the Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act of 2012 (Farm Bill). The bill is designed to improve many agricultural programs, including crop insurance, all while reducing the country's deficit by $23 billion. As part of this process, the Senate this week is voting on a number of amendments that could bring serious harm to the crop insurance program. On Monday June 18, PIA went out with a Grassroots Action Alert, asking PIA members to contact Senators to oppose several amendments that would be detrimental to the crop insurance program. Thanks to your help, on June 19 Senate Amendment 2156 sponsored by Sen. Gillibrand (D-NY) was defeated. It prevented a $5 billion cut to crop insurance. Other harmful amendments did make it through and PIA will focus on preventing them from being part of the House of Representatives’ version of the Farm Bill.
