Several PIA members met with Rep. Rick Berg in Bismarck, North Dakota at a private luncheon on May 23. The meeting was very informal, informative and productive with several topics discussed.

Rep. Berg agreed with PIA’s opposition to the proposed $40,000 cap on farmer subsidized crop premiums and the conservation tie-ins to crop insurance proposed by some farm bill supporters. The 2012 Farm Bill discussions centered around a compromise between the already-passed House version and a Senate version if one is passed in June. If a farm bill does not get enacted before the Oct. 1 deadline, an extension may not be all bad because the program crops would operate under the current farm bill law. Reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) was also discussed. Ironically, during our meeting word came that the Senate had passed a 60-day extension of the NFIP, part of an effort to avert a scheduled May 31 expiration. The group also discussed concerns with the Federal Insurance Office (FIO) and the threat it poses to state regulation of our industry.

The PIA delegation included Paul Bernardy, Dan Weber, Jessica Cottingham , Don and Mark Hardy, Mike Just, Steve Becher and Kent Olson.
