PIA has joined with the Crop Insurance and Reinsurance Bureau (CIRB) and the American Association of Crop Insurers (AACI) in opposition to an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2014 Budget Resolution which has been filed by Senators Mark Begich (D-Ak.) and Jeff Flake (R-Az.). PIA joined in signing a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell regarding Amendment 254. It states in part:

“While the amendment purportedly aims to provide transparency into taxpayer investment in crop insurance, this information is largely available in aggregate form on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s website. It is unclear what ‘certain crop insurance information’ is sought and what benefit will arise from its release. If the purpose is to target individual farmer and rancher information, we would question the motive. Is the goal to embarrass those who produce America’s food, fiber, feed and fuel for receiving taxpayer support for this critical risk management protection?”

The letter urges Sens. Reid and McConnell to oppose the amendment.
