On April 30, 2015, Congress' Joint Budget Conference released their proposed Fiscal Year 2016 Budget that, in a victory for PIA members, did not include any cuts to crop insurance. Opposing cuts to crop insurance was one of the top priorities at this year's Federal Legislative Summit (FLS). Thank you to everyone for your advocacy on this issue.

The House of Representatives passed the proposed budget by a 226-197 margin and now awaits a vote in the Senate in early May, where it is expected to pass along party lines. Since this is a non-binding resolution, the budget does not go to the President for his approval or veto, and it merely serves as a blueprint for the appropriations process.

The next step is for the House and Senate appropriations committees to begin their work to appropriate the funding for each federal program, agency and department. Unfortunately, attempts to cut crop insurance will continue, so we will need to remain vigilant. PIA will continue to monitor the budget process to ensure that crop insurance subsidies do not receive any cuts.
