Authorization for the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) was extended through October 31 after the Senate passed a continuing resolution with the extension. It was immediately signed into law by President Obama on September 30, just hours before the program would have expired. The Senate has still to act on a bill previously passed House bill that would extend the program to March 31, 2010.

These stop-gap short term extensions to the NFIP are due to the fact that a comprehensive reform measure is still awaiting action, but has been crowded out of the Congressional calendar by more pressing matters. PIA supports common-sense reforms including a five-year reauthorization, which would bring needed certainty to the program.
