August 31, 2012

With the continuing wildfires in the Western states and more predicted, we again call your attention to the attached recent NFIP-issued bulletin and PIA discussion. This bulletin liberalizes the application of the 30-day waiting period for NFIP policies issued in connection with possible flooding after fires on federal lands. Please note that there are specific timings that must be met in a very prescribed manner in order for a consumer to secure this potential coverage benefit. Also please note that this FEMA/NFIP liberalization is only for floods that arise from and/or are exacerbated by forest fires on federal land. Be sure you speak to all your prospected insureds about this, remembering that only properties impacted from federal land fires have this liberalization (at this time). This is a particularly significant consideration in the U.S. Western states of UT, ID, CO, AZ, NM, CA, OR and WA, but incidents have arisen in VA and other dry southeastern states.
