Residents of the High Park Fire burn area have until midnight Wednesday August 29 to purchase emergency flood insurance, according to the Colorado Division of Insurance. The Waldo Canyon fire deadline for purchasing flood insurance is midnight, Saturday, September 8.

Standard requirements for flood-insurance purchases require a 30-day waiting period before coverage takes effect. However, on July 10 the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) granted a waiver on waiting periods for areas that could be affected by flooding because of wildfires on federal land. The High Park Fire burn zone fits that description. Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.) was instrumental in the legislation that enabled the waivers. President Barack Obama signed it into law July 6. To take advantage of the FEMA waivers on waiting periods, flood insurance must be purchased within 60 days of a fire’s containment.

“Flood damage is not covered under standard homeowners’ policies,” said Colorado Commissioner of Insurance Jim Riesberg. “Areas downstream from the areas damaged by the Waldo Canyon and High Park wildfires are at higher risk for flooding, so the time to purchase flood insurance is now.”
