PIA Letter to Senate Urges Support for NFIP Reform and Extension (S. 1940)

June 21, 2012

PIA sent a letter to U.S. Senators urging them to support S. 1940, a bill to reform and extend the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

“PIA supports the Senate bill for many reasons including, and perhaps most importantly, the long term authorization it provides,” our letter states. “An important part of this program is instilling confidence in the availability of this insurance and this bill accomplishes that goal. Long term authorization provides stability and allows insurance agents to continue to deliver this coverage to the millions of Americans that rely on it.”

The letter also expresses support for the flood program moving toward actuarially sound
sound, or risk based, rates for more properties, as well as market-based increases on maximum coverage limits and the addition of addition of business interruption insurance (BII) to the NFIP reauthorization. You can read PIA’s letter to senators here.

The NFIP bill is slated to be worked on June 21 in the Senate, but some amendments could derail any momentum.
