Flood insurance rates for some policyholders increased starting October 1 as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) continued to implement the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012 (BW-12). The first phase of rate increases (Section 100205) affects many policyholders who own buildings constructed before their community adopted its first Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM). You can help your clients understand the changes and prepare for their new bill.

To help you discuss these changes with your clients, FEMA developed a suite of resources, including:

  • BW-12 Brochure: Share with your clients so that they always have the necessary information on hand when they make decisions about their policies.

Additionally, FEMA partnered with the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.) to create six videos which provide details about the legislation and give advice on how your clients can best prepare. Each video was developed around a specific topic:
