Mississippi Attorney General Martha Coakley has filed an amicus brief in federal court in support of a lawsuit contending that new Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) flood rates are illegal and arbitrary. The lawsuit also argues that FEMA did not gather accurate data before implementation of its new rates. The brief was filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi, and asserts that the sudden increases in flood insurance costs could spur numerous foreclosures among homeowners who are struggling with mortgages.
