Despite the on-again, off-again nature of this meeting because of the Sequestration, this weekend the National Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP) 2013 Conference will be held in California. PIA’s representative to the FEMA and the NFIP Richie Clements will attend. Included will be a meeting of the Flood Insurance Producers National Committee (FIPNC), the Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS), along with FEMA/NFIP. The groups will meet to discuss changes resulting from the Biggert-Waters Act.

PIA has been participating in the industry-FEMA/NFIP working group, attempting to identify and get clarifications on a number of questions that have arisen since the 10/01/2013 effective date of changes was issued at the beginning of this month.

Along with that, we draw your attention to two recent NFIP bulletins:

w-13020Calling for comments - It has been very difficult to anticipate what version of treatment FEMA/NFIP would apply to another, similar continuing condition of “flood in progress.” However, Biggert-Waters includes some language to address a possible modification and single treatment of this matter. Through this bulletin, NFIP is calling for comments, experiences and suggestions of how to approach this issues relative to the recent past applications – and going forward, complying with Biggert-Waters. Please share any comments, suggestions or experiences with us so that we may include these in our filed comments and discussions with FEMA/NFIP.

w-13024 – FEMA/NFIP is clarifying how filings for ICC coverage will operate under the several recently issued extended dates for claims filing and/or filing proof of loss for a claim for specific states and past storms that have taken place after Katrina, Wilma and Rita. Again, please share any comments, questions or information requests that you might have in this area with us. For additional information contact: patbo@pianet.org.

Speaking of CATs: The Insurance Information Institute’s (I.I.I.) April issues newsletter included several leading catastrophe issues that PIA members and working groups regularly address. With III’s permission, we are able to pass along the leading five CAT summaries; highlighting the portions in each issue that relate to the current issues being discussed by PIA’s working groups and add several directly related updates. The information is a great source of current, comprehensive information for members’ needs and PIA affiliates’ use as well.
