The Federal Trade Commission recently revealed it has received more than 1,000 complaints about scam attempts related to the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA). Scam attempts could involve subsidies the ACA offers to consumers earning less than 400 percent of the federal poverty level, where a caller might offer “direct deposit” of subsidies if they “confirm” their bank account and Social Security numbers. Eric Cioppa, Superintendent of Maine’s Bureau of Insurance, advises that, “Consumers should discuss options with known, reputable individuals and sources of information, such as their independent insurance agent.” People can also find summaries of proposed insurance plans at the bureau’s website www.maine.gov/insurance.
