Louisiana Insurance Commissioner and National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) President Jim Donelon believes in never letting a meeting with the President of the United States go to waste. During a Nov. 20 meeting with NAIC officials at the White House, called to discuss insurance policy cancellations related to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Donelon handed the president a letter asking him to have the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) refrain from imposing heavy flood insurance rate hikes set to occur in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Donelon said that because of the differences among states over the issue, he was acting as Louisiana commissioner in presenting the letter, not on behalf of the NAIC.

Donelon said Louisiana is one of the states that benefits most from the NFIP. He said the assistance sought in the letter would be very important to both Louisiana and the nation at large. Legislation that would delay the NFIP rate increases up to four years is currently pending in Congress.
