PIA National sent a letter to Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) expressing our thanks to him for pressing the department of Health and Human Services (HHS) about PIA’s concerns regarding consumer risks associated with healthcare Navigators (see previous article). PIA spent six weeks working with key congressional offices to build support for this effort.

“Your letter prompts HHS to provide the Department’s perspective on key areas of consumer protection, including inquiries into background checks, training, and oversight,” said Mike Becker, vice president of federal affairs for PIA. “We greatly appreciate your recognition of the critical need for stringent consumer protections and the valued role agents and brokers provide.”

Rep. Hunter notes that a proposed rule setting standards for Navigators, issued on April 5, 2013, addresses conflict-of-interest, training and certification and other proposed standards, but that key questions remain unanswered and key concerns remain unaddressed.
