A new trend has been noticed with healthcare reform underway: Some health insurers are opening retail insurance stores. The health insurance exchanges that are part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) are organized around online marketplaces. But the fact that companies are opening retail locations indicates that many people want in-person assistance, rather than dealing with a website.

In this video report, A.M. Best looked at one location that has just been opened by Highmark in Allentown, Pennsylvania, one of ten in the state.

What It Means to Agents: This is another sign that the many changes in the health insurance market may be opening up new opportunities for independent insurance agents. Consumers want professional advice. Agents can offer it — along with something direct writers cannot: choices of companies. In addition, agents can cross-sell these new customers.
