Independent insurance agents and brokers have been dealing with a lot of changes ever since the adoption of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). PIA member Thomas Flynn of Jaeger & Flynn in Clifton Park, New York, said his agency is coping with the changes by expanding operations. They have added 16 new employees to deal with the federal law and the company spends $400,000 annually on software upgrades and technology. To adapt to the ACA, some insurance agencies have created their own form of private exchange. That’s what Rose and Kiernan, Inc., another PIA agency in East Greenbush, New York did. Flynn has reservations about private exchanges, preferring to focus on helping businesses navigate healthcare regulations. “It’s just overwhelming,” he said.
