On Jan. 27, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that more than 9.5 million people have applied for 2015 health insurance coverage through the federal and state exchanges created under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

HHS reports that close to 7.2 million people have chosen or re-enrolled in a health plan via the federal HealthCare.gov exchange since Nov. 15. In addition, another 2.4 million people chose a plan or were automatically enrolled in coverage though the exchanges run by 13 states and the District of Columbia. It remains uncertain how many of the 9.5 million applicants paid their premiums and were fully enrolled.
