NAIC Kicks off Financial Summit in Maryland

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) is hosting its Financial Summit from May 30-June 1 in Inner Harbor, Maryland. The Financial Summit is designed to give insurance regulators and industry representatives the opportunity to discuss the latest issues relevant to the insurance industry. The conference includes keynote discussions and other sessions addressing health care reform, corporate governance, capital markets, reinsurance, and updates on financial reporting and federal legislation. Attendees will also receive the latest information on key NAIC membership initiatives and the latest financial solvency issues. PIA National will attend.

Participants will receive an update from NAIC staff on key provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and their affect on state insurance regulation. There will also be a discussion of the current status of the debate over federal regulation of insurance and broader regulatory reform. Topics will include implementation of Dodd-Frank, the Federal Insurance Office (FIO) and its affect on insurance companies and regulators as well as the current agenda in Congress regarding insurance issues. The regulators and industry participants will also discuss natural catastrophes and steps regulators can take to avoid insolvencies in the wake of disasters.
