Very Few Homeowners Have Earthquake Insurance

Many homeowners lack earthquake insurance, even in earthquake-prone states such as California. In fact, fewer than 12 percent of the state's homeowners had earthquake insurance in 2010, and fewer than 10 percent of businesses had the coverage, according to the Insurance Information Network of California. California Earthquake Authority CEO Glenn Pomeroy says standard homeowners’ and business coverage does not cover earthquake damage, and the low penetration of earthquake coverage runs contrary to the tremor risks facing the state. Earthquake insurance penetration in states away from the Pacific Coast are even lower, say experts.
