Insured losses stemming from the deadly storms that ripped through more than a dozen states in the South and Midwest in late April could reach as high as $5 billion, according to EQECAT Inc. At least 300 people are believed to have died during a wave of powerful tornadoes and windstorms that touched down in 14 states from April 26-28. The heft of the damage, according to reports from state emergency management departments, took place in Alabama, Tennessee, and Mississippi during a day-long outbreak April 27 of upward of 211 tornadoes. Initial reports indicate as many as 10,000 structures were destroyed, putting insured property damage loss estimates between $2 billion and $5 billion, EQECAT stated in a report released April 29.
