Policyholders with questions regarding their coverage for damage caused by Hurricane Irene are advised to call the number provided on their insurance policies or contact their insurance agent.

In addition, policyholders can contact special toll-free numbers set up by insurance companies, according to the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.). The I.I.I. has compiled a list: Insurance Company Claims Filing Telephone Numbers. However, it should be noted that consumers in areas where telephone service has been affected by a storm are sometimes able to call "regular" numbers, but unable to access toll-free numbers. This was a big problem reported by PIA of Louisiana during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Since Hurricane Irene was much less severe, we hope that telephone communications will be affected less.

"Keep in mind that due to high call volume in the wake of a disaster, it may take some time to get through on some numbers - so please be patient," said Loretta Worters, vice president with the I.I.I. The Insurance Information Institute also has a free brochure: Settling Insurance Claims after a Disaster.
