March Toll for Insured Tornado Losses is $1.2 Billion

Aon Corp. reports that severe weather in the United States has caused more than $1.2 billion of insured losses in March 2012. Insurers reported more than 170,000 claims linked to tornadoes in the Midwest and Tennessee Valley that occurred on March 2 and March 3, according to Aon’s report. Additionally, severe weather in the Great Lakes region in the middle of the month cost the industry more than $150 million, the report said. Other natural disasters in March include flooding in Hawaii and Louisiana and wildfires in Colorado. U.S. insurers incurred catastrophe losses totaling $35.9 billion in 2011 from disasters including Hurricane Irene in August. That exceeded the average of $23.8 billion from 2000 to 2010.
