The National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami will issue new alerts for those living along the coast of the U.S. mainland for the 2015 Atlantic hurricane season, which begins June 1. In addition to tropical storm and hurricane warnings and watches, the center will issue storm surge alerts for any location where water may rise at least three feet, or 91 centimeters, above normal, said NHC Storm Surge Unit Team Leader Jamie Rhome. The NHC will issue surge watches 48 hours in advance of a tropical storm system and warnings 36 hours before the cyclones make landfall. The new alerts will be in addition to surge maps that were introduced in 2014.
