PIA National received the following statement, a clarification, sent to us at our request by ChoicePoint as part of our ongoing discussions and working relationship. In this statement, ChoicePoint provides further details on how it develops data on lead lists:

April 29, 2003

"It has come to the attention of ChoicePoint that misinformation regarding the development of our leads generation product(s) is circulating in the insurance agent market. ChoicePoint does not use information derived from insurance agent underwriting inquiries to create surveys, which are then sent or communicated to consumers on whom the inquiry is made. Nor does ChoicePoint use the fact that an underwriting inquiry occurred to create such surveys. Rather, ChoicePoint's leads generation product(s) are developed based on information that ChoicePoint obtains from consumer surveys published by independent companies that are unrelated to ChoicePoint."

"As you know ChoicePoint has been at the forefront in supporting legislation that prohibits the use of such data. Legislation has now passed in six states this year prohibiting the sale of agent data."

What It Means to Agents:  As we noted receently, many PIA affiliates are working closely with ChoicePoint representatives on the issues related to insurance scoring. To the best of our knowledge and your reports, these working relationships have been productive. We've underscored to ChoicePoint that PIA wishes to build on those working relationships and resolve issues that keep us coming back to the many aspects of their "lead list" process. PIA will continue to press issues that members bring to our attention and encourage PIA affiliates to advise us of your efforts and results in the insurance scoring area.
