In a March 2003 letter, PIA National formalized our issues exchanges and discussions with ChoicePoint concerning several issues. PIA has asked for a meeting with ChoicePoint in Alexandria to resolve these matters, as well as discuss emerging issues related to insurance scoring beginning to appear on Capitol Hill.

These issues include:

  • Outstanding clarification on how ChoicePoint is processing consumer surveys to "qualify" lead list data.
  •  "Universal/approximate" insurance scores being sold to the public by all credit/scoring bureaus.
  • Questions about ChoicePoint's new "improved" lead list containing these approximate scores.
  • Clarifying further PIA National's reservations about certain provisions as expressed in the NCOIL insurance scoring model, having to do with agent ownership, indemnity and mandating insurers to review/consider insurance scores on a regular underwriting basis.

Late last week, we received an e-mail response advising us that ChoicePoint is looking into these matters, but with no indication when soon we may meet. A reference was made to the June NAIC meeting, but PIA wishes to meet sooner than that.

Many PIA affiliates are working closely with ChoicePoint representatives on the issues related to insurance scoring. To the best of our knowledge and your reports, these working relationships have been productive. We've underscored to ChoicePoint that PIA wishes to build on those working relationships and resolve issues that keep us coming back to the many aspects of their "lead list" process.

What It Means to Agents: PIA will continue to press issues that members bring to our attention and encourage PIA affiliates to advise us of your efforts and results in the insurance scoring activities.
