Life insurer John Hancock Financial Services has accepted an offer to be taken over by Manulife Financial of Canada for $11 billion in stock. The deal will end the long independence of one of the oldest life insurers in the United States and make the newly combined company the second largest life insurer in the U.S. and the largest insurer in Canada.
