The recent fires in southern California could end up being the costliest in California history. The Insurance Information Institute predicts losses will be about $2 million and notes that could go higher because not all fires are out yet. Previously, the Oakland Hills fire of October 1991 had been the most destructive fire in California history and the tenth costliest in U.S. history, with 2,900 homes lost and $2.24 billion in insurance claims paid, adjusted to today's dollars.
