The NAIC has announced it will conduct a two-day symposium February 23-24 in Washington, D.C. entitled "Ensuring Solvency, Transparency and Competitiveness in a Global Insurance Market." Panel topics will include "A Closer Look at National Standards for the State-based Insurance System." Other sessions will deal with annuities and long term care insurance, capital adequacy in insurance rating, monitoring competitive markets, risk-focused versus traditional solvency regulation, regulatory transparency in the global market and a discussion of the Basel II Accord.

This event will include a luncheon address by Stuart Rothenberg, Editor and Publisher of The Rothenberg Political Report and a columnist for the Capitol Hill newspaper, Roll Call.

What It Means to Agents: It is significant that the NAIC has decided to engage at this level with a highly visible policy event in Washington, D.C. This positions state insurance regulators at the center of the debate on Capitol Hill regarding the future of insurance regulation. From a strategic perspective, this is an excellent move.
