PIA members from around the nation held their 20th Annual Federal Legislative Summit (FLS) on April 3, 2003, in Washington, D.C. Agents held productive meetings with their Members of Congress, concentrating on PIA National's three main issues of focus for the FLS, optional federal charters for insurance, privacy and natural disaster legislation.

Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Virginia), Chief Deputy Majority Whip in the House of Representatives, provided a legislative update to PIA members during a keynote address at the start of the summit. Cantor holds the highest appointed position in the House Republican leadership and also serves on the powerful tax-writing Ways and Means Committee. Other Members of Congress who attended the FLS kickoff breakfast included Rep. Ken R. Lucas (D-Kentucky) and Rep. Frank D. Lucas (R-Oklahoma).

After the FLS kickoff breakfast, delegations of PIA agents set off for a day of meetings on Capitol Hill. Among the sessions, members of PIA of Connecticut met with Senator Chris Dodd (D); the PIA contingent from Mississippi met with Senator Trent Lott (R). The Louisiana PIA delegation met with Reps. Richard Baker (R) and Billy Tauzin (R); the PIA people from Kentucky met with Senator Jim Bunning (R). PIA of Georgia met with Senator Zell Miller (D).

Following the sessions on Capitol Hill, the Professional Insurance Agents Political Action Committee (PIAPAC) held its annual fundraising dinner. The keynote speaker was Rep. Chip Pickering (R-Mississippi).
