Briefs Agents on Issues Including Tax Relief, Privacy, Optional Federal Charters

WASHINGTON, April 9, 2003 - Rep. Chip Pickering (R-Mississippi) addressed members of the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents (PIA National) during the group's annual Federal Legislative Summit April 3, 2003 in Washington, D.C.

Speaking to the Professional Insurance Agents Political Action Committee (PIAPAC), Pickering expressed the hope that final legislative action will be taken on President Bush's tax proposals prior to the Easter congressional recess. He predicted that the final magnitude of tax cuts would be determined by negotiations between the House and the Senate.

"Some form of President Bush's tax package, somewhere between $726 billion and $350 billion, will come out in the form of tax relief that we hope will give the economy a needed boost and needed confidence," said Pickering. "That blueprint will allow us to send the markets a signal on where our priorities are and what we will be able to do as a nation in the coming months."

Pickering also addressed some of the issues of specific interest to PIA. He said there will be movement on privacy, adding he hopes that the resulting legislation will "look at ways to protect consumers in the need for privacy, but not do it in a way that is burdensome or unworkable for private business."

Regarding proposals for optional federal charters for insurance, Pickering said, "We think we will maintain state regulatory primacy as Congress moves forward on regulatory issues."

Founded in 1931, PIA is a national trade association that represents member insurance agents and their employees who sell and service all kinds of insurance, but specialize in coverage of automobiles, homes and businesses.
