Independent insurance agents would be exempted from a bill approved last week by the Louisiana House to limit campaign contributions from regulated companies to candidates for state insurance commissioner and the Public Service Commission. House Bill 510 by Rep. Billy Montgomery (D) would bar companies and their employees from giving contributions of more than $500 to the commissioners. It also would require that the donations be made only in the year leading up to the election. Rep. Ronnie Johns (R) said the original bill would be unfair to insurance agents. He offered an amendment to exempt  "any producer licensed by the Department of Insurance to write, market or sell insurance products or any professional organization that represents such producers." The change was approved, 76-18.
