There has been widespread speculation that New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer may run for governor of New York.  If he does, there is one less obstacle in Spitzer's path. On Tuesday, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-New York) announced that he will stay in the U.S. Senate instead of running for governor. Had Schumer decided on a gubernatorial run, he would have been a formidable opponent. New York's senior senator was just re-elected with 71 percent of the vote. Incoming Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) persuaded Schumer to stay in Congress by giving him a seat on the Finance Committee and appointing him to head the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
