Former Michigan insurance regulator Frank Fitzgerald died this month at the age of 49. He was appointed commissioner of what would become the state's Office of Financial and Insurance Services in 1999, before resigning shortly after Democratic Governor Jennifer Granholm took office in 2003. Fitzgerald, a Republican, was at New York's LaGuardia Airport when he suddenly died. Fitzgerald was a staunch supporter of state regulation and he questioned those who said they support state regulation while at the same time advocated an optional federal charter to regulate the industry.
