At midnight on Tuesday November 16, former PIA agent Richard J. Codey became governor of New Jersey. As President of the state senate, Codey succeeds James McGreevey, who resigned after announcing he is gay and admitting an extramarital affair. Codey is a veteran legislator first elected to the state Assembly in 1973, at the age of 26. At the time, he was the New Jersey's youngest-ever state lawmaker. A retired federal judge will oversee Codey's insurance agency in a blind trust during Codey's 14-month tenure as acting governor. Codey has severed all his ties to the insurance industry and asked the state to suspend his license, to avoid the appearance of any conflict of interest.
