GEICO, the nation's fifth largest private passenger auto insurer, is now writing policies in New Jersey for the first time in 27 years. Direct writer GEICO is the second major auto insurance company to enter New Jersey since June 2003, when Governor James E. McGreevey (D) signed legislation to reform the auto insurance marketplace. Mercury General reentered the New Jersey market in 2003 and has since written over 40,000 policies and appointed more than 300 agents.
