On July 15, 2004 the House Transportation, Treasury, and Independent Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee approved a measure that effectively bars the Treasury Department from taking action during FY 2005 on a proposal to give banks real estate brokerage powers. Efforts by banks to enter the real estate brokerage business have been strongly opposed by the National Association of Realtors since 2000. The Realtors have also backed separate bills (H.R. 111/S. 98) to permanently ban banks from the real estate brokerage business.
