On December 20, police recovered the body of missing Massachusetts businessman Matthew Soumakis from the Chicago River. Soumakis was last seen on the morning of Monday December 5. He had been attending the winter meetings of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). In the days immediately following his disappearance, police used sonar equipment to comb the Chicago River and the shoreline of Lake Michigan. Teams of divers searched the 39-degree waters that run just behind the hotel, finding nothing.

A manager with financial software firm SS&C Technologies Inc., Soumakis was married in February, and his wife is expecting their first child. Soumakis "drowned in an undetermined manner," according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Police are investigating his death and declined to say whether they suspect foul play.
