New York Governor-elect Eliot Spitzer has tapped Eric R. Dinallo to become the state's insurance superintendent. Dinallo, currently the general counsel of Willis Group Holdings, was chief of the Investment Protection Bureau for then-Attorney General Spitzer's office. He was responsible for heading up a series of investigations into unethical practices of the financial services industry that led to the largest insurance brokers in the world facing allegations of wrongdoing and paying billions of dollars in settlements.

Other figures close to the Attorney General or his investigations into the financial services industry who later assumed leadership positions at firms involved include Marsh, Inc. CEO Michael G. Cherkasky. A former prosecutor, Cherkasky was once Spitzer's boss in the office of Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau. Cherkasky replaced Jeffrey Greenberg at Marsh after Greenberg reportedly failed to cooperate with Spitzer's investigation. Another insurance firm that entered a settlement agreement with New York's attorney general is ACE. Effective January 1, 2007, Audrey Samers, former General Counsel at the New York Insurance Department, will become the global ethics and compliance officer at ACE. While at the NYSID, she headed up its investigations into insurance firms, in cooperation with the AG's office.

PIA of New York prepared this briefing on the Dinallo appointment.
