Travelers personal lines says it will implement a ten percent discount on auto insurance to hybrid vehicle owners beginning in February. Hybrid vehicles combine an electric motor powered by a rechargeable battery pack with a traditional internal combustion engine; they get as much as 60 miles per gallon.

The discount will be automatically applied to new policies or existing policies as they come up for renewal. It will apply to most parts of a policy, such as bodily injury liability, collision, and comprehensive coverage. The discount won't apply to uninsured motorist coverage. In October, the Farmers Insurance Group announced a five percent discount on hybrids and alternative-fuel vehicles in California only. Travelers' discount does not apply to alternative-fuel vehicles.

"Our preliminary research indicates that hybrid owners tend to fall into the preferred insured category, and at Travelers, lower risk drivers are rewarded with lower premiums," said Greg Toczydlowski, senior vice president of product management for Travelers. "Additionally, hybrid vehicle sales have at least doubled every year since the first car was offered in the U.S. in 1999."
