Florida Governor Charlie Crist (R), at the conclusion of his first legislative session as governor, has declared its work as the "nail in the coffin" of Florida's insurance industry. The remark followed action by the legislature to ban operation of Florida-only insurance company subsidiaries by national insurers and extend a rate freeze for customers of Citizens Property Insurance, the state's own insurance company.

"When these insurance companies threaten us with this 'We're going to leave your state' stuff, we say, 'Go ahead.' We don't need that kind of business operating in Florida," Crist said. "We need businesses operating in Florida that have a good corporate ethic and care about people."
