Recently, PIA of Nebraska & Iowa had an item in their weekly newsletter that "connected the dots" when it comes to professional insurance agents and their lobbying clout.

"Insurance agents rank at the top as the most influential lobbyists in any district and are considered a reliable source of information", according to Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA).  Rep. Frank is Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee and paid this high compliment during a recent speech.  At the same time, over in the Senate Agriculture Committee, the Durbin-Brown ACR proposal supported by the National Corn Growers Association and Farmland Trust was de-linked to crop insurance with the losers blaming the "powerful insurance industry" players."

"Why are insurance agents a strong lobbying group? Because they are advocates for the consumer, they are trustworthy, they understand technical aspects of insurance, and they understand the issues. So what's the problem? Unfortunately, too few insurance agents use THEIR lobbying power before local, state and national policymakers. Maybe they are too busy or maybe they are afraid to "rock the boat!" The biggest reason might be that agents don't realize the respect and power that their advice and opinions provide."

Words of wisdom from the Heartland! Thanks to PIA of Nebraska & Iowa!
