In the fall of 2009, there are more issues being debated or considered in Congress with potential impact on professional independent insurance agents than at any other time in recent years. As lawmakers reconvene from what was a raucous August recess, healthcare reform is the first issue to deal with, but by no means the only one. But there also is a raft of proposals with the potential to help or hurt the businesses of independent agents and the consumers who are their customers.

Among the other issues of concern to independent agents: regulatory reform, natural catastrophe legislation, workers comp and renewal of the federal flood insurance program.
